William Matcham is an Assistant Professor of Economics at Royal Holloway University of London and a Research Affiliate of STICERD at the London School of Economics. William holds a PhD in Economics and was the Ely Devons prize-winner for his MSc and BSc in Econometrics and Mathematical Economics, all three of which were untaken at the LSE.

William’s research studies innovation and patents in the United States with a focus on improving the quality of patent screening and litigation. Recent research (summarized here) estimates economic models to evaluate the social costs of the United States patent examination process.

He has presented his work at universities, including NYU, Stanford, Boston University, and Oxford. He teaches industrial economics and has other research projects related to credit card markets and applied econometrics.
